Maya Village Cultural Tour

Tour Description

This fascinating tour is a visit to the Mayan village of San Antonio to experience for yourself how the ancient people of this region lived in tune with their environment.  It is an experience that offers you an intriguing glimpse into a fast disappearing world in which the local Yucatec Maya depended upon the jungle for everything they needed.  You will experience how the Mayan lived up to fifty years ago before the modern world began to impinge.  Come, learn, and help prepare your traditional Mayan meal while enjoying a cultural experience you will not soon forget.

The tour begins with a cooking demonstration in which you observe the making of corn tortillas the traditional Mayan way with the use of the “manos” and “metate” grinding stone.  You even get to try your hand at making some, and when done you get to sample some corn tortillas with fresh coconut oil and a delicious corn “atole” drink.  The ladies of the home will tell you about their culture and cooking practices as they demonstrate the ancient Maya cooking traditions in their own home.  After the cooking demonstration you will observe the ancient Maya art of clay pottery making.  You will see how it’s skillfully done from scratch using the turning wheel and then if you wish you will get to try shaping some pottery yourself.  Good luck with that!  It’s a lot of fun though.  By the time you are done the meal will be ready and you will enjoy some delicious Maya chicken soup or pollo asado con arroz y frijol.   It’s a cultural experience you will remember for a lifetime!
