If you are a chocolate lover, or if you would just like to know of its origins, then right here in the heart of San Ignacio an extraordinary experience is waiting for you! We will take you to see local Maya man Adrian Choco and his family at the Ajaw Maya Chocolate Making Shop for a fascinating and delicious experience. The tour starts with how chocolate starts – at the farm located just five minutes out of town. You will tour with Adrian and a local cacao farmer and learn about how the cacao is planted and cared for until it grows to maturity.
We then return to the shop to see the process of making chocolate and even help with the actual grinding of the cacao with the ancient manos and metate grinding stone. All this, along with learning the amazing history of chocolate and the Maya people, and you will then get to taste the cacao fruit, the delicious cacao chocolate drink, and then finally the Maya chocolate bars. It’s an unforgettable hands on experience, and then besides enjoying your own homemade chocolate, Ajaw Mayan Chocolate has many different products for you to choose from that you might want to take home.
