Tour Description
The Mayflower Bocawina National Park, named after one of the ancient Mayan sites recently found there, consists of over 7000 acres of beautiful broadleaf forest and jungle in a semi-mountainous terrain. The area was declared a National Park in 2001 and is located about four miles off of the Southern Highway at Mile 6. The Mayflower site along with two other sites in the park are currently being excavated by the Mayflower Archeology Project.
Archeologists predict once the excavation is complete the Mayflower site will rank as one of the largest in Belize. There is a visitor center staffed by two park Wardens who are available to give directions and advice to visitors who wish to hike and sightsee in the park. Trail maps are available upon paying the entrance fee to the park wardens. All three archeological sites are near the visitor’s center and easily accessible on clear trails. The park has also become well known to exotic birders, with over 200 different species recorded in the last few years.
You can expect to see the Keel Billed Motmot, Macaws, and several different types of parrots and toucans. There are also howler monkeys, coatimundis, anteaters, peccaries, and several other species of wildlife evident in the park including the elusive jaguar. Of course, since the jaguar is a nocturnal creature it usually sleeps during the day, but hikers often see fresh footprints near the trails. Some of the hikes are rated moderate to difficult and require hikers to grab onto ropes to climb to the top of the trails. This tour is a full day. What to bring: Hiking shoes or boots, (open-toed sandals are not recommended), insect repellent, sun hat, camera, binoculars, water bottle, swimsuit, towel.
